Merus Power Plc, press release, 1 August 2024 at 9:00

Merus Power will deliver two Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) and a control system to GRK to support the power quality of Estonian rail traffic. The compensators are designed to ensure the quality of electricity at the substations supplying the railway.

GRK is responsible for a significant railway project in Estonia, electrifying approximately 150 kilometers of the main track from Aegviidu to Tartu. This project is part of a broader strategy of substantial investment in rail transport in Estonia. Estonia aims to electrify most of the country's current rail network by the end of 2028. Estonia's rail network spans about 1,200 kilometers, with only the sections around Tallinn currently electrified. Electrifying the railways is part of Estonia's green transition, allowing diesel-powered train traffic to be replaced with more environmentally friendly equipment.

The role of the Merus® STATCOM compensators is to compensate for the possible asymmetry caused by the transformers supplying the railway, ensuring the power quality in the rest of the power grid. The delivery and deployment of the compensators will take place during 2025.
