In a tribute to their late father, two sisters traveled to Tanzania and climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of a fundraising effort for Mesothelioma UK. Jennifer Shutt, age twenty-four, and her sister Cathy, age twenty, accepted pledges from donors to raise awareness of the disease that ended the life of their father, Michael, at the age of fifty-four. Mr. Shutt had been exposed to asbestos during his working life and eventually developed mesothelioma.

The sisters expect to collect around £6,000 (US$9,000) for their efforts to raise money for Mesothelioma UK, a non-profit agency established to raise awareness of the disease and to educate workers on how asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma and other lung diseases. Recent reports from government agencies show that the incidence rates of the disease will continue to rise for at least the next ten years. The reports also show that asbestos-related diseases are also the number-one workplace killer in the UK.

Jennifer Shutt offered her thanks to all the donors who pledged donations and the supporters who helped the sisters make the trip to the tallest mountain on the continent. She reportedly said that she was overwhelmed by the spirit of giving she encountered when she related the sisters’ quest to honor their late father. She called the trip to the summit “by far the most mentally challenging and physically exhausting” feat of their lives.

The sisters and their guides reached Uhuru Peak (19,300 feet) more than a week after they started. Jennifer also reportedly said that the trip “was worth every bit of it” as they stood atop the mountain. However, the cold temperatures at the summit did prevent one display of emotion. She said that the cold air and high winds would have made their tears freeze to their faces if they had started crying.

Jennifer told reporters that her sister, a medical student, also plans to climb Mount Everest. She said that she would support her sister in the effort, “but I suspect I will be supporting from a nice low altitude!”
