Metacon signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Poland for a turnkey green hydrogen project with ca 5 MW capacity

Metacon AB (publ) (“Metacon” or the “Company”) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Katowice (“RDSF”), Poland. The MoU relates to preparations prior to an expected order and supply of a turnkey electrolyser system with up to 5 MW of total capacity. The total value of the expected order is approximately 5.8 MUSD if fully utilised within the MoU.

The MoU is part of RDSF's development project "Forest of Energy", which aims at investments in fossil-free energy and hydrogen and to begin the construction of several facilities for green hydrogen production which will be used to power emission-free public transport. Project start is planned for 2023, with hydrogen production started in early 2024

The pilot project within the framework of the MoU will be an electrolyser with a capacity of up to 5 MW linked to a planned RDSF solar PV installation in the Katowice area. Detailed design and dimensioning will be done jointly in the next phase of the preparations. The PV system is to be owned and operated by RDSF, and Metacon is to supply electrolyser equipment and turnkey infrastructure.

Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon commented: "We are extremely happy to contribute to the green transition in Poland together with RDSF. The opportunity to use hydrogen to both store locally produced fossil-free energy and to use it to power emission-free transports summarizes the core of our vision of contributing to self-sufficient and sustainable societies,”.

Damian Sieber, Director at RDSF commented: “Foresters many years ago, when creating the "Forest of Energy" development project, understood that green energy – an alternative to fossil fuels – is the future not only of energy or transport, but also of the State Forests. Many areas under our management will for various reasons never be a forest, such as areas beneath power lines. We are aware that the production of green energy is one thing, but storing surpluses is a real challenge today. Therefore, the project for the production and storage of green hydrogen is extremely valuable, as it can be used as fuel for zero-emission vehicles or can be converted into heat or electricity. Despite the ability to obtain hydrogen, which we as humans have had since 1900, thanks to innovative solutions, we can produce it with respect for the natural environment, which is extremely important to us as naturalists”.

About Metacon AB (publ)

Metacon AB (publ) develops and manufactures energy systems for the production of hydrogen, heat and electricity. The core products are based on a patented technology that, through so called catalytic steam reforming of biogas or other hydrocarbons, generates hydrogen. The development of Metacon's reforming products is done within the wholly owned subsidiary Helbio, which is a spin-off from the University of Patra, Greece and was founded by Professor Xenophon Verykios in 2001. From the onset, the business has focused on catalysts and advanced reforming for high-efficiency hydrogen production.

Metacon also offers system solutions for the production of hydrogen through electrolysis, a large and globally growing area for small and large-scale production of green hydrogen. Electrolysis is a process of starting and driving a chemical reaction to split water by adding electricity. If the electricity used is non-fossil and green, the hydrogen will also become completely climate neutral and green. Green hydrogen can be used in, for example, the transport sector, the basic industry and the real estate sector with a better environment and climate as a result. https://metacon.se/

About RDSF

RDSF is the largest organisation in the European Union managing forests that belong to the Polish State Treasury. The organization manages almost one third of Poland’s territory considered particularly valuable as it is overgrown by forests. What is more important this part is systematically increasing thanks to the foresters’ effort.

The organization of the Polish State Forests, perfected for decades, is based on the principle of self-financing and does not receive any tax funding. Forest units operate at the national, regional and local levels and employ about 25,000 people.
