Metrocare, London's healthcare recruitment agency has launched the "London Carer of the Year" Awards as an acknowledgement to the thousands of professional carers in London who provide an outstanding difference, yet are amongst the lowest earners in the UK*.

The competition is aimed towards carers and nurses working in a professional setting, for example a nursing home or supported living environment within Greater London and will be judged based on nominations received from employers, colleagues or those receiving the care.

An independent panel of judges (yet to be confirmed) will review the nominations and provide a shortlist for interview. The finalists will then be chosen for a prestigious awards evening to be held in London in early 2012.

Nominations are encouraged through the website www.careroftheyear.co.uk and the closing date for nominations is midnight on 1st December 2011.

The awards are designed to allow individuals to stand out and be recognised as the best within their profession, it also provides a platform for excellence within London's social care sector.

Healthcare charity MaMA are now confirmed as the main charity associated with the awards and they are delighted to offer their support. Charity Secretary Francesca Keating said "The aims of our charity work although based in Mozambique are not that different to that of the London Carer of the Year Awards; raising awareness and professionalism within healthcare. The awards will undoubtedly help recognise and reward the capitals best carers!"

One of the Directors of Metrocare, Steve O’Brien said "We are delighted to launch these awards and hope to have the most possible nominations to make the competition more exciting. London Carer of the Year is just a part of Metrocare's commitment to excellence."

* Data compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in December 2010 suggests that care assistants and home carers are amongst the lowest paid in the UK earning an average of £12,905 per year

MaMA is a registered Charity working to make a difference at a local level in Mandimba District, Mozambique, a group of 75 villages in sub-Saharan Africa. This area is one of the poorest areas in the world, with abysmal health outcomes. www.ma-ma.co.uk
