The headlines this week are full of how carers are abusive and neglectful and homes are going to the wall with poor standards.

But this is the exception to the rule, the majority of homes and services do provide an excellent level of care making a massive difference to vunerable individuals every day. But bad news gets too much press, so it is time to reward the professional carers who have to deal with challenging situations all the time using only a smile, soothing voice and kindness as their weapon...

Do you know of or work with a carer who is great at what they do? We are calling for nominations to reward the capitals finest carers, this can only happen with your help... We want to reward the best professional carers that London has to offer, the unsung hero's who day in day out make a difference to peoples lives.

The competition is for carers and nurses who work in a professional setting, like a nursing home or supported living environment within Greater London and will be judged based on nominations received from employers, colleagues or those receiving the care.

The independent panel of judges are ow being confirmed, they will review the thousands of nominations to provide a shortlist for interview. The finalists will then be chosen for a prestigious awards evening to be held in London in early 2012.

Whilst the closing date for nominations is midnight on 1st December 2011 if a carer has more than one nomination it will certainly help them get noticed!

So lets help the care industry be recognised for its good deeds rather than shocking revelations. These awards are designed to allow individuals to stand out and be recognised as the best within their profession, it also provides a platform for excellence within London's social care sector.

Healthcare charity MaMA are now confirmed as the main charity associated with the awards and they are delighted to offer their support. Charity Secretary Francesca Keating said "The aims of our charity work although based in Mozambique are not that different to that of the London Carer of the Year Awards; raising awareness and professionalism within healthcare. The awards will undoubtedly help recognise and reward the capitals best carers!"
