Metronet Launches 1 Gigabit Internet Service in 19 Cities and Rural Communities across Indiana
Metronet, a leading provider of cutting-edge, fiber-optic broadband communication services, today announced the company is breaking the Internet sound barrier by officially launching its 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) Internet service in the 19 cities and rural communities that the company serves throughout central Indiana. With this announcement, these 19 communities will become one of the few “Gigabit Cities” in our country where residential customers can obtain Internet access speeds of up to 1 Gbps, which is 100 times faster than the current average for broadband speeds in our country at 10 Megabit per second (Mbps).

The new Gigabit Internet service, which is powered by Metronet’s innovative fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) architecture, is available now for residential customers living within the city limits of Connersville, Crawfordsville, Franklin, Greencastle, Huntington, Lafontaine, Lebanon, Madison, New Castle, North Manchester, North Vernon, Seymour, Vincennes, Wabash, Whiteland/New Whiteland, West Lafayette/Lafayette and Ulen.

Metronet’s new Gigabit Internet service is equivalent to transmitting one billion bits of data every second, or 1,000 Mbps. With these blazing fast Internet speeds, customers can now get what they want online when they want it rather than waiting for additional bandwidth or capacity.
In addition, Metronet is delivering a 1 Gbps Internet connection more than five years ahead of the goal that the FCC set for the National Broadband Plan, which calls for 100 Mbps Internet speeds for all households nationwide by 2020. According to the National Broadband Map, only 8.9 percent of the population in the United States has access to 1 Gbps Internet service, with most of these connections primarily intended for businesses.
According to company officials, the Gigabit Internet will unleash a community’s ability to pursue any number of potential applications, new advancements and incredible innovations in the fields of education, entertainment, public safety, home automation, transportation, industrial development, commerce, healthcare and many more.
Cinelli continued, “Having access to the Gigabit Internet is quickly becoming the single, most important differentiator a community can have today. For example, residential customers using a 1 Gbps Internet connection can now stream multiple high-definition videos with little to no delays and even download movies, complete albums and other TV shows in a few seconds rather than waiting 15-20 minutes or longer to download these files. In addition, residential customers who have multiple devices using the same Internet connection in their home will have more than enough bandwidth and speed to support any current or future broadband application, including online gaming, home automation, video conferencing and the growing demands from cloud-based services.
The Gigabit Internet will also play a key role in driving new advancements in other industries, such as telemedicine and education. Physicians practicing in small cities and rural communities can now access and immediately view X-rays and medical images from their home computers or handheld tablets, seek an immediate consult from a specialist living across the country, and conduct remote monitoring and observation of home-bound patients. Imagine school classrooms having the ability to use interactive digital textbooks, online libraries, 3-D printing and modeling, and even virtual labs to help educate students while interacting with any number of students located throughout the world. In addition, school districts can use video conferencing technologies to help conduct professional development opportunities or guest lecturers that will help build better, more qualified teachers to work in our schools.
