Galerie papers takes the lead in publishing paper guidelines

Press release 16.11.2005

M-REAL TAKES THE LEAD IN PUBLISHING PAPER GUIDELINES FOR COLOUR MANAGEMENT
Categorization of papers according to the ISO standard is a demanding task.
Taking a lead in the marketplace, M-real is now publishing guidelines that
classify its Galerie range of publishing papers according to ISO 12647-2 and
ISO standard ICC profiles.

The ISO standard for offset printing (ISO 12647-2), and ICC profiles
corresponding to the standard are gaining more and more acceptance in the
offset printing world by both sheet-fed and heat set web offset printers.

"One of the most important matters when printing according to ISO 12647-2 with
ICC-profiles is to select the right profiles to match the paper in the printing
job. The right ICC profile can be either the standard ISO profile, a job or
paper specific profile, or a modified profile for a category of papers or
presses", explains Miika Jokinen, Assistant Vice President, Technical Marketing
at M-real.

M-real's ICC profile guidelines are based on extensive testing of the surface
properties that impact on dot gain when Galerie Papers are printed. The
guidelines also utilise research into the effect that paper shade and
brightness have on print results

"Our guidelines give recommendations on how to group Galerie Papers according
to a printer's own standard and ICC profiles. We also provide recommendations
and help in adjusting existing ICC profiles for the best match with Galerie
Papers, and can assist in creating and implementing paper or title specific ICC
profiles", says Jouni Marttila, Project Manager at the M-real Technology Centre
in Kirkniemi and specialist in colour management.

M-real provides knowledge and expertise for printers, pre-press companies and
content creators on colour management throughout the production chain, and
recommends best practice for the use of Galerie Papers. The range includes
Galerie Art, Galerie Fine, Galerie One, Galerie Brite and Galerie Lite.

ISO 12647-2 is the official ISO standard for offset printing. ICC profile is
one practical application of the ISO standard in print production processes.
ICC profiling provides a way to calibrate the image reproduction process so
that RGB colours displayed on the designer's monitor match the colours
reproduced with CMYK inks on the page of the publication. ICC profiles are
files that contain data on how to convert and reproduce colours accurately from
one device to another.

More information about standard ISO profiles can be found at www.eci.org.

important. Different papers will affect dot gain in different ways, affecting
the quality of the final job", says Jouni Marttila.
