M-real publishes Corporate Responsibility Report 2005

Press release 23.3.2006

M-real's Corporate Responsibility Report 2005, which recently has been
published, describes the company's performance in accordance with its
commitment and principles. The report is available in English and Finnish.

“This is our second Corporate Responsibility Report. Last year's was the first
and it was rewarded in the Finnish competition for Environmental and Corporate
Responsibility reporting”, says Armi Temmes, Senior Vice President, Corporate
Public Affairs. “A new part in this year's report is the case studies,
describing M-real's corporate responsibility principles in a practical
context”.

Some major issues covered in the report are:

M-real has received chain-of-custody certification for all its paperboard,
magazine and fine paper mills. A chain-of-custody certificate records the
successive changes in the ownership and management of wood-based products from
harvesting of raw material to sales of finished products. The deliveries of
certified wood to M real increased from 60% in 2004 to 63.4% in 2005 in
accordance with the strategy to increase the amount of certified wood in the
products. The report also includes information on M-real wood procurement by
country.

Due to recent environmental investments as well as on-going improvements in the
mills, the different effluents and emissions have been reduced in comparison to
2004. Most noticeable is the 31% reduction of discharges into water measured as
COD. Another achievement is the substantial reduction of landfill waste.

In the occupational safety and well-being area the “lost time accident
frequency rate” was reduced by 18% compared with 2004. This is mostly due to a
more thorough work with preventive actions, based on M-real's policy for
occupational safety and well-being.

This and much more can be found in the Corporate Responsibility Report. The
other two reports in the annual reporting package are Annual Review and Annual
Financial Report. All three reports can be downloaded from www.m-real.com.
