M-real Simpele board mill's investment project progressing successfully

Press release 16.3.2006

M-real's 60 million euros investment project at Simpele board mill is
progressing successfully and according to schedule. The investment includes
various technical improvements in the board machine and finishing, as well as a
completely new sheeting department and a reel warehouse.

The first and most challenging phase of the investment project took place in
December 2005 when the machine was shut down for just one week. Three new
headboxes were installed and modifications made in the wet end. This first
phase of the total investment project has already resulted in considerable
improvements in the formation and quality consistency of Simwhite and Simcote
boards. The construction of the new sheeting department and reel warehouse has
also progressed successfully and finishing equipment is currently being
trialled.

The second phase of the investment will include e.g. upgrades to the press and
drying sections and the installation of a completely new reeler. A shutdown of
17 days will start during the week commencing March 20. All construction work
will be completed by the end of March 2006.

The rebuild will improve the quality of Simwhite and Simcote boards, resulting
in better yield through light-weighting and enhancements to the visual
appearance, smoothness and consistency. M-real Simpele board mill will have
the latest winding and packaging technology, a state-of-the-art cutter reel
store, increased board production capacity of 215 000 tonnes per annum and
sheeting capacity which will enable the mill to offer the Express Board
sheeting service.
