M-real Simpele renewed board machine started successfully

M-real Simpele mill has completed the EUR 60 million rebuild of the board
machine with a successful and in-time start-up on April 6 2006. The rebuild has
already now resulted in considerable improvements in the quality of Simcote and
Simwhite paperboards. 

The significant investment, now completed, included major improvements to the
board machine as well as to the finishing. All three headboxes, the surface
sizer and the reeler were replaced and some major changes were also made in the
drying section. The finishing department was largely renewed with a new sheet
cutter, rewinder, reel and sheet packaging equipment and new sheeting
department and reel warehouse. Sheeting capacity will thus increase, resulting
in better product availability. The total capacity of the board machine will
increase from 170 000 tonnes to 215 000 tonnes per annum. The main supplier for
the rebuild was Metso. 

“The rebuild project was executed very effectively, in stages, with only two
short shut-downs'' says Jukka Kettunen, Senior Vice President, Production and
Technology, “This investment will further strengthen Simpele's strong market
position as a supplier of well-appreciated and reliable high-performance
paperboards. We can already now confirm considerable improvements in the
formation and quality consistency of Simwhite and Simcote boards. The improved
quality will result in better yield through light-weighting. Furthermore, the
rebuild will also have a very positive impact on the sustainability of the
entire supply chain. The new light-weight boards consume less raw materials,
decrease transport volumes and produce less waste. M-real Simpele is one of
M-real Consumer Packaging's core production assets and will, as a result of
this rebuild, retain its position as one of the most competitive and efficient
production units in Europe.”
