M-real team receives Finnish Engineering Award for the development of BCTMP
method

Press release 18.5.2005

The 2005 Finnish Engineering Award goes to a working group consisting of Maija
Pitkänen, Ph.D. (Chem.), Marko Pekkola, M.Sc. (Eng.), Ole Nickull, M.Sc.
(Eng.), Isto Nikamaa, B. (Eng.) and Kai Vikman, M.Sc., (Eng.). The team has
developed the energy-efficient and environmentally friendly BCTMP process,
which also conserves raw material. The process has been created for the
specific needs of the paper and board industry. The prize is 20,000 euros.

The development work has produced a more environmentally friendly and
cost-effective alternative to the chemical pulp process for the production of
BCTMP, or bleached chemithermomechanical pulp. In addition, it will be possible
to control the characteristics of BCTMP, such as the brightness, opacity and
purity of the pulp, taking into account the requirements of the end products.
Both softwood and hardwood are used in the production process.

- This award is a welcome acknowledgement of the long-term, progressive and
creative work that is on-going at M-real. It encourages us to continue with our
innovative and client-oriented approach, says Aarre Metsävirta, Senior
Executive Vice President and Deputy CEO of M-real, as he congratulates the
winning team.

M-real Corporation is the world leader in applying the new BCTMP production
methods in practice. The M-real Joutseno mill, which came on stream in 2001, is
the first production plant in the world which is based on this particular
technology. M-real is in the process of building a second BCTMP mill in
Kaskinen. Once it comes on stream next autumn, M-real will be the largest
producer of high quality BCTMP pulp in the world.

The Finnish Engineering Award is an annual prize which is awarded for
exceptional merit in the field of technological development. The prize is one
of the most esteemed in its field in Finland. It is awarded by the Finnish
Association of Graduate Engineers TEK and Tekniska Förening i Finland TfiF
(Finnish Technological Society).
