The Joutseno mill gives all our customers a competitive edge

On 23 August saw the inauguration in Joutseno of M-real Corporation's new
production facility. It will produce bleached chemithermal mechanical pulp
(BCTMP), which is used as a raw material in making high-quality printing
papers, packaging carton and consumer packaging applications. The mill has a
production capacity of 210,000 tonnes a year.

- "The characteristics of the pulp produced by the Joutseno mill will give our
customers a new kind of competitive edge. The plant's integration into the pulp
mill will give our own competitiveness a big boost," observes Executive Vice
President Aarre Metsävirta. The Joutseno mill manufactures mechanical pulp, in
which the main raw material is aspen. A major user of the pulp is the Kangas
paper mill, whose production orientation has been changed over from uncoated to
coated products. The best known of the printing papers made from CTMP is
Galerie One, which is manufactured at the Kangas mill by PM4, for uses in
direct marketing and high-quality corporate printed products.

The Joutseno BCTMP mill is part of the M-real Paper group's investment
programme, which has a budget of EUR 220 million. About half of this amount has
gone towards building the Joutseno production facility. M-real Corporation is
the market leader in fine papers in Europe and one of
Europe's leading manufacturers of high-quality paper and board. M-real's
turnover in 2000 was nearly EUR six billion and it has an annual production
capacity of 6.3 million tonnes. The company employs about 22,600 people.
