Metsä Fibre press release 2.6.2021

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, has signed a contract on sawmill maintenance with Oy Botnia Mill Service Ab.

The signed contract includes the maintenance of the Rauma sawmill’s whole process, excluding property maintenance.

“We want the best professionals and experts in the industry as our partners to ensure the high availability and cost-effectiveness of the world’s most modern sawmill, as well as the continuous improvement of the operations. New technology and analysis of operating data based on machine learning also enable a better focus on maintenance. It is also important to the Rauma sawmill that our partner is committed to shared safety targets,” says Liisa-Maija Perävainio, Sawmill Manager.

Botnia Mill Service has long been a partner in the maintenance of Metsä Fibre’s pulp mills. This also includes the maintenance of the Rauma pulp mill operating within the Rauma integrated mill.

“The maintenance contract for the Rauma sawmill further strengthens our cooperation with Metsä Fibre. The new contract achieves significant synergy benefits, and we will be able to manage the maintenance operations as a whole, given that we’re already in charge of the maintenance of the Rauma pulp mill. The contract opens new opportunities for maintenance professionals, and we will begin the recruitment process immediately,” says Elina Engman, Head of Division, Caverion Industry.

Work on Metsä Fibre’s Rauma sawmill construction site is proceeding as planned and on schedule. Walls and roofs have been installed for the sawline and grading line buildings, and concrete casting work for the floors is in its final stage. The other buildings will be completed by the end of September. The first debarking machine was installed in May. Installing machines and equipment in the whole area will start in August.

The degree of Finnish origin at the construction site for the Rauma sawmill is high – around 70 per cent – and the construction phase employs 1,500 people.

Metsä Fibre is building the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma. The value of the investment is approximately EUR 200 million, and the annual production of the new unit will be approximately 750,000 cubic metres of pine sawn timber. The new sawmill will be a worldwide forerunner in technology and efficiency. For example, the use of machine vision and artificial intelligence in different stages of the sawing process is a significant new development. Similar technology is not yet in use anywhere in the sawmill industry.
