First special transports of Kemi bioproduct mill to arrive

The first special transports of the bioproduct mill can be seen at the inland port of Kemi centrum on Friday, 29 October 2021, no earlier than at 6:00 p.m. with weather reservation. The special transports will be carried out during evenings to cause minimum inconvenience to other traffic. Pay attention to maintaining a safe distance from a special transport, and let the people working with the transport work in peace. The smoothness and safety of the transports will be ensured by traffic marshals, whose directions must be followed in all circumstances without exception.
Once in Kemi, the special transports pass by barge from the deep-water port of Ajos to the inland port of Kemi centrum, where the components are moved on shore. The weather affects the special transports, particularly on the route from Ajos to the inland port, and their schedule will need to be adjusted according to the weather conditions. From the inland port, the route passes through Kauppakatu, Sairaalakatu, Hahtisaarenkatu, Lehtokatu and Pajusaarentie to the prefabrication area at the bioproduct mill site. The street lighting by the route has been removed and will be re-installed as soon as the transports this autumn are over. The transport route will also be subject to some parking restrictions, which will be lifted once the transports this autumn are over.
There is a total of nine components to be transported. The components are delivered by one of main implementation partner Valmet and the components are part of the mill’s fibre line; parts of digester and imprenegtation vessel. The longest transport will be 35 metres long, and the widest 14 metres wide, while the heaviest component will weight 275 tonnes. All nine components will be transported via the same route over a period of around 17 days. The transports will proceed at walking speed, and the transport of a single component from the inland port to the mill’s construction site will take approximately four hours. The next special transports will arrive in the spring of 2022.
Our logistics partner DSV is responsible for organising the transports and the components’ transport in Kemi. The special transports’ planning phase has taken two years, and arrangements have been made in close cooperation with the town of Kemi, as well as Kemin Energia ja Vesi.
The Kemi bioproduct mill project of Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, is progressing according to plan and on schedule. The first building, a 105-metre stack, was completed at the end of September. While the piling work on-site continues, its most active phase has already passed. Concrete casting is being carried out for instance at the evaporation plant, the debarking department and the wastewater treatment plant, as well as at the new operating office. The installation of the precast concrete element structures of the fibre line building, turbine building and recovery boiler’s electrostatic precipitator building is progressing. The mechanical installations began in July with the installation of the large bleached pulp storage towers. The number of people currently working on-site on a daily basis is 750.
