Oy Metsä-Botnia Ab will extend the evaporation plant of its Äänekoski pulp mill
by adding two evaporation units, a new surface condenser and a concentrated
liquor storage tank to its existing 7-phase evaporation plant that is used to
extract water from black liquor. New electricity facilities will also be
provided.

Estimated total projects costs will be slightly over EUR 6 million. The project
was initiated immediately, with equipment installations scheduled to begin in
August and wiring to the present process in the shutdown periods next autumn
and December. The investment will be available for use after the December
shutdown in 2002. The extension work will also involve renewing the upper parts
of the flanges of evaporator units 6 and 7 during the shutdown period in
autumn.

The extension project continues the work on developing the Äänekoski pulp mill,
improves its operational reliability and reduces the environmental loading
imposed on water and air. The investment is part of the plant development
programme through which pulp mill capacity will be raised from 485,000 tons to
500,000 a year.

The extension work will be carried out by Kvaerner Pulping Oy, Tampere.
