Metsä Group selected Fortum Recycling & Waste as the main partner for the Kemi pulp mill demolition project
Metsä Group and Fortum Recycling & Waste have signed an agreement on dismantling the old pulp mill in Kemi, Finland. Fortum Recycling & Waste will be the main contractor for the demolition project and the demolition site will employ approximately 50 people. The price of the demolition contract will not be disclosed.
Metsä Group's old pulp mill in Kemi ceased operations in autumn 2023 with the start-up of a new Kemi bioproduct mill. The safety procedures and demolition of the old mill was started immediately after the mill shutdown. The actual demolition will start in early 2024 and will be completed by the end of 2025.
All buildings to be demolished are located on Metsä Group's Kemi integrated mills’ site. The machinery and equipment of the demolished mill will be recycled for reuse as different metals.
