The company SFS Certification awarded a product safety certificate (HACCP) to
Oy Metsä-Botnia Ab's Kemi pulp mill on 4 February 2002. The certificate is the
first to be awarded to a pulp mill anywhere in the world for this particular
purpose. The certificate verifies that the pulp mill's operations comply with
the requirements of standard DS 3027.

The HACCP system is designed to ensure the quality and safety of chemical pulp
intended for the manufacture of food packagings and hygiene products. In
practice, this means a detailed inspection of the entire production chain in
order to be able to identify and manage all potential risks to product safety
associated with chemical pulp production. The system also governs the choice of
process chemicals as well as the storage and transport of products to
customers.

Product safety issues are part of Kemi pulp mill's operations system, which
includes systems for quality, environmental management, occupational health and
safety, as well as management of the chain of custody for wood raw material.
Each of these components has received individual SFS certification since the
early 1990s. Kemi pulp mill's operations system corresponds with the
customer-focus business concept included in Metsä-Botnia's strategy.
