Right to use PEFC label granted to Metsä Tissue's Finnish mill (20 December, 2004)
Label reflects good forest management
Metsä Tissue's Mänttä mill in Finland has become the first tissue mill in the
world to be granted the right to use the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement
of Forest Certification Schemes) label. The label tells customers and consumers
that the mill's products are manufactured from wood obtained from forests that
are managed in a sustainable way. The right to use the PEFC label concerns all
tissue and bleached cooking papers manufactured at Mänttä. At first, Metsä
Tissue utilises the label in the global sales and marketing of its cooking
paper products. The right to use the label was granted by the Finnish Forest
Certification Council in December 2004.
The right to use the PEFC label required certification of the system for
managing the chain of custody of wood raw material. SFS-Inspecta Certification
granted Mänttä mill a chain of custody certificate in November 2004. Mänttä
obtains its pulp from Botnia's Rauma and Kaskinen mills. Wood for Botnia's pulp
mills is supplied by Metsäliitto Cooperative, which knows the origins of wood
purchased under each individual contract. Metsäliitto buys most of its wood
from private forest owners whose forests have been certified.
Metsä Tissue's goal is to be the most environmentally friendly supplier of
tissue and cooking papers. Through its quality, environment and chain of
custody certificates the company can demonstrate that it has complete control
of environment-related issues throughout the entire supply chain, i.e. from the
forest to the consumer's shopping bag.
PEFC spreading rapidly
* PEFC stands for “Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification
Schemes”.
* PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for national forest certification
schemes. The scheme originated partly from the forest principles adopted by the
United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro
in 1992.
* In terms of the area of certified forests, PEFC is the world's leading
forest certification scheme.
* In Europe, 70 per cent of forests have received PEFC certification.
Europe's forests are largely privately owned.
* At the end of November 2004, the PEFC Council's Eighth General Assembly
recognised the forest certification schemes of Chile and Australia. So far,
PEFC has recognised 16 independent forest certification schemes covering 55
million hectares of forest. In 2005, PEFC certification is to be extended to
tropical and subtropical forests.
* Development of the PEFC scheme is an open process to all interest groups.
* Finland's national scheme is called the Finnish Forest Certification
System.
