Additionally, Metso is recognized alone in the Environmental Stewardship category for the results of its 2023 sustainability actions in Chile.
The prestigious Mining Magazine annually celebrates the mining industry by recognizing international companies that have stood out for their performance and contributions in terms of innovation, technology and safety, among others. This year, the magazine's editors voted for the case presented by Codelco Andina in collaboration with Metso as the winner of the Editor's Choice category. In addition, Metso South America was distinguished by finishing first in the Environmental Stewardship category.
Editor's Choice Award to Codelco Andina and Metso
Codelco Andina and Metso Chile collaborated in successfully conducting a quick and incident-free major maintenance of the site’s Larox® filter. With an emphasis on execution and respecting the environment, the project which has been underway for 3 years, aimed at enhancing the operational continuity, reliability and availability of the Larox® filter in the processing plant. This achievement represents a significant advance for the mining industry and the performance of Codelco Andina machinery. Metso’s filter processes 80% of the fine copper production, being one of the largest filters used in Chilean mining.
“The learning acquired in this project and the coordination work of both parties were key to meeting the proposed objectives. Metso’s Larox® filter at the Andina Division met the targets set for the customer’s equipment availability and effective utilization. It is notable that joint planning also allowed us to carry out the service without delays or accidents, which was important for our strategic partners at Codelco,” says Leonardo Osorio, Project Execution Director for South America at Metso.
Award for sustainable actions: Environmental Stewardship
For the first time, Metso has been awarded Mining Magazine’s Environmental Stewardship award, which highlights Metso’s performance as a company in matters of environmental sustainability, aimed at helping address the impact of the mining industry on climate change.
In Chile, Metso has reduced its carbon footprint by 11% through sustainability awareness campaigns and initiatives with mining companies that propose various actions to combat the effect on the environment. Measures Metso Chile has applied include the installation of photovoltaic panels and mill lining recycling, AI training, reduction in the use of paper, plastics and transport as well as the increased use of renewable energy.
Regarding this recognition, Eduardo Nilo, president of Metso for South America, comments: “We are enormously proud of the great execution of our company. We work hard to establish parameters that address a problem that not only affects us but also future generations. This achievement adds to the awards obtained this year in the region, such as the Carbon Free certification in Brazil for our event neutralization initiatives and the Eikon International award in the environmental sustainability category. These recognitions reflect our commitment to society and the constant search for possibilities to reduce our carbon footprint and the impact we have on the environment.”
