Penny Oman
Penny Oman was born and raised in Sexsmith, a small town in northern Alberta. At the age of fourteen, when she was an active, easy-going teenager, she was involved in an accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down.After spending a year in the University Hospital in Edmonton, Penny spent the next three years at the Glenrose School Hospital. It was during this time that she attended a lecture tour by the late mouth painter Myron Angus, an MFPA artist. Always interested in painting, she was immediately determined to try his painting technique.Years later when Penny was becoming more independent, she began painting by mouth and submitted her work to the MFPA. She was accepted as a student artist in 1978. The MFPA has reproduced her works in their calendars and on cards since that time. Painting mostly landscapes, she is able to exhibit and sell her paintings through the MFPA and on her own.Penny studied at the University of Alberta and took further courses through the U OF A extension program to further develop her painting skills. She now teaches others to develop their artistic talents and contributes her time to visit schools and hospitals. Penny also plays an active role helping people understand the obstacles faced by people with disabilities and the importance of reducing unnecessary barriers. For several years, Penny was on the Provincial Committee for National Awareness Week as well as serving on other Boards.Penny was married to husband Garry in April 1999. They make their home in Edmonton with their pet Pomeranian, Colonel Kernel. Penny became an Associate Member of the MFPA in March 2001.
Penny Oman est née et a grandi à Sexsmith, une localité du nord de l'Alberta. À l'âge de quatorze ans, adolescente amiable et active, elle a été victime d’un accident qui l'a laissée tétraplégique.Après un séjour d'un an à l'hôpital University à Edmonton, Penny a vécu pendant trois ans à l'hôpital Glenrose School. C'est alors qu'elle a assisté à une présentation de Myron Angus, peintre de la bouche et artiste de l’APBP maintenant décédé. Ayant toujours été intéressée par la peinture, elle a tout de suite voulu essayer cette technique.Quelques années plus tard, alors qu'elle arrivait à être plus indépendante, elle commençait à peindre avec la bouche et présentait ses oeuvres à l’APBP. Elle était acceptée en tant que membre étudiant en 1978. L’APBP reproduit ses oeuvres dans ses calendriers et cartes de souhaits depuis ce temps. Peignant surtout des paysages, elle peut faire des vernissages et vendre ses peintures par le biais de l’APBP et de son propre chef.Penny a suivi des cours dans un programme de perfectionnement à l'Université d'Alberta pour développer ses talents de peintre. Elle enseigne maintenant à d'autres à développer leurs talents artistiques et consacre une partie de son temps à visiter des écoles et des hôpitaux.Penny joue un rôle actif pour aider les gens à comprendre les embûches rencontrées par les handicapés et l'importance d'abolir les barrières inutiles. Penny a été membre du comité provincial pour la semaine de sensibilisation nationale ainsi que d'autres conseils pendant plusieurs années.Penny a épousé Garry en avril 1999. Ils habitent à Edmonton avec le Colonel Kernel, leur petit chien de Poméranie. Penny devenait Membre associé de l’APBP en mars 2001.
