Pennsylvania’s largest K-8 charter school, Chester Community Charter School (CCCS), recently hosted its first of three “Night of the Arts” events, on the school’s East campus. CCCS students and their families were invited to take part in various art and music education programs, and were introduced to some of the schools newly offered art and music classes. Some programs will be funded through grants awarded by 21stCentury Community Learning Centers and the Barbara Berry Foundation.

More than 700 parents and students, and community members, were able to review creative courses that CCCS students take daily, such as drawing, music theory, vocal technique, filmmaking, and percussion section, among others.

Rodney Whittenberg, filmmaking instructor, CCCS, said, “The school’s new art and music programs challenge our students to think.” He continued, “In regards to filmmaking, specifically, it tests their knowledge of writing, language, imagination, creative thinking and problem solving. It teaches them to manifest an idea and bring it to life.” Mr. Whittenbeg demonstrated video editing to parents and students with sample clips created by students in his class.

CCCS music teacher Matt Barlow, who taught attendees how to play Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” on the piano, also commented on the effect of the school’s programs. “Our students are fantastic! Each morning, they come in early, excited about the arts, and they’re receptive to the content we provide.” He continued, “They appreciate this opportunity to truly be creative.”

Wearing black-tie regalia, Dr. David Clark, CEO, and Ms. Doreen Harvell, Director of Art and Music for the school, CCCS, served as hosts on the red carpet. Dr. Clark announced to the attendees, “Tonight is all about community. We’re coming together, this evening, to celebrate the arts at Chester Community Charter School, and to show you all the current education programs in place for your children.”

The event will also take place on the school’s West and Upland campuses, on October 28 and November 5, respectively.
