Finnish Mobile Game Studio Fingersoft Celebrates the Success of Its Six-Hour Workday Initiative

Fingersoft, the Finnish mobile game studio renowned for its Hill Climb Racing mobile games, is thrilled to announce the resounding success of its six-hour workday initiative, introduced in February 2023. The company's progressive approach to work culture has garnered widespread attention and continues to inspire change within the industry.

In early 2023, Fingersoft unveiled an innovative work model, allowing employees to work just six hours a day (80% of full working time) while receiving 90 percent of their full salary. This approach emerged from a desire to explore alternative work arrangements, particularly in the gaming and technology sector, where discussions about a four-day workweek have gained momentum.

Fingersoft employees now have the choice to work either six hours a day, five days a week, with their salaries maintained at 90 percent of the full amount or to continue with the traditional eight-hour workday with full pay. This year, approximately 20 percent of Fingersoft’s employees have opted for the six-hour workday, while some have adjusted their work models based on their individual life situations.

Before committing to a new workday model, Fingersoft had an experimental phase conducted between 2021 and 2022, during which Fingersoft tested two options: the six-hour workday and the four-day workweek. Following a thorough analysis, it became evident that the six-hour workday not only sustained productivity but also significantly enhanced employee well-being and work-life balance.

Fingersoft has now operated under the six-hour workday model for nearly a year, with exceptional results and positive feedback.

"I finish my day with much more energy to spare"

Mr. Samuel Inkiläinen, a Game Artist at Fingersoft, has observed positive changes in his life after adopting the new working model. He shared, "It feels great knowing I have time to complete all my chores and cooking at home, while still having time to pursue my own interests without having to sacrifice sleep. I finish my day with much more energy to spare, which has led me to pick up my guitar more often and sign up for classes to learn new skills.”

As work-life is getting more intensive, having a shorter day can, in fact, offer better results. Mr. Inkiläinen continues: "I've noticed that challenges usually arise late in the day when I'm not as focused. In the past, trying to push through these issues only tended to make things worse. But with shorter workdays, I can simply end the day and then tackle the problems after a good night's sleep, which often leads to simpler and better solutions.

According to Fingersoft’s latest employee satisfaction survey conducted this fall, work-life balance is among the most important/meaningful factors for Fingersoft’s employees. They also feel work-life balance is exceptionally well realized through the provided opportunity to work six-hour days.

Shorter Workdays Without Compromising Productivity

Mr. Jaakko Kylmäoja, CEO of Fingersoft, underscored the significance of adapting to evolving work trends, stating, "Our unwavering commitment has always revolved around enhancing the well-being of our employees. The six-hour workday model has unequivocally demonstrated that we can substantially improve employee well-being without compromising productivity. This permanent welfare benefit empowers our employees to strike a better balance between work and leisure."

Kylmäoja further emphasized the direct correlation between employee well-being and productivity, asserting, "We've observed that as our employees' well-being improves, their contributions become more valuable, fostering a notably positive atmosphere within our workplace."

Beyond the introduction of the shorter workday, Fingersoft invests in employee well-being through various initiatives, including private health and dental care, comprehensive insurance coverage, allowances for leisure activities, and flexible working arrangements. Employees also enjoy access to the company's gym, sauna, and various hobby groups and events.

For foreign employees planning to relocate to Finland, Fingersoft offers special programs to assist with move-in procedures and support in learning the Finnish language and culture.
