”No company is really sustainable without digital fingerprints” - BaseN, a Finnish technology company builds truly sustainable businesses with digital twins

The Finnish technology company BaseN is trailblazing the future of truly sustainable business. Arguably, truly sustainable businesses have possibly not existed in the past 100 years. Digital twins are now making a difference.

The man on a mission to educate the world on taking full responsibility on anything that is produced is Pasi Hurri, CEO of BaseN Corporation.

The innovator, founder and chief executive has seen how industrial sustainability cannot only be achieved by setting up recycling operations, but by the integration of digital solutions into production that cover the many incarnations of any material.

“The only way for a manufacturer to be truly responsible and sustainable is to introduce a digital fingerprint into their products,” Hurri says. If a company does not know where its products are or where they end up, it does not actually act responsibly despite the labels and certificates it has been issued.

Digital twins are the so-called digital counterparts, digital fingerprints of a physical object, which can track the full lifecycle of a product or its use – while securing privacy, we hasten to add. Indeed, BaseN’s groundbreaking technologyprovides a platform to host the data from digital twins in a secure way. The data that is gathered is solely owned by the manufacturer.

With digital twins, a manufacturer of millions of products can track the full lifecycle of each product, use the data to create long-lasting customer relationships, and build new business opportunities.

Digital twins are the key to a financially and environmentally sustainable business. BaseN's innovations are widely used in several industries. As an example, Norsepower (www.norsepower.com), the world's leading manufacturer of rotor sails for large ships, has implemented digital twins on the BaseN platform, which, by controlling the rotor sails on the ships, reduce the ships' fuel consumption by up to 20%. Energy efficiency and ship progress data are presented to stakeholders related to the voyage and are used as a tool for further development of the system.

A similar example from another industry is the Californian technology company Trimble Corporation (www.trimble.com), which uses the BaseN platform, to which BaseN has delivered a complete digital twin of the construction site called Trimble CrewSight (Construction Site Security | Trimble Site Management) as an OEM solution. BaseN resourced the project, which was carried out under severe time pressure, and the system, which strongly supports the control of site operations and optimizes labor costs, was implemented as a basic solution to be delivered to the customer in about three weeks. The system is now widely used by Trimble's customers and its continuous further development is part of the project agreed with Trimble.
