£4.5m boost to the tidal energy development in Anglesey

Economy and Infrastructure Secretary, Ken Skates has announced £4.5m of EU and Welsh Government funds to help boost the marine and tidal energy sector in North Wales.

The funding will support the Morlais Demonstration Zone in Anglesey, which will help the development and commercialisation of multiple tidal stream technologies.

The demonstration zone is in close proximity to the area of Minesto’s Holyhead Deep site. Minesto is collaborating with Morlais Marine Energy to jointly develop grid and cable infrastructure for the demonstration zone and Minesto’s future proposed array in Holyhead Deep.

Dr Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto said: “This is fantastic news for Morlais and very encouraging for the development of tidal energy in Wales. Collaborating initiatives between the Holyhead Deep site and the Morlais Demonstration Zone could significantly reduce costs and minimise the combined environmental footprint of the two projects.”

In a press release issued by the Welsh Government, Economy and Infrastructure Secretary Ken Skates said: “The energy generated from wave and tidal flows can play a major role in delivering our ambitions for a Welsh low carbon economy as well as creating sustainable jobs and growth. Wales’ coastline means we are well positioned to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the blue economy, which is why the Welsh Government is committed to supporting the creation of new tidal demonstration zones that will help industry develop and test new and innovative tidal and wave technologies for commercial success.“
