New counter helps staff handle 26% increase in customers

Northwood Garden Centre is a successful family-run business based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, situated in picturesque woodland overlooking the Lyme Valley. Owned by Nick and Christina Gascoyne,it stocks everything even the most green-fingered gardener could require. “We aim to provide good service at the right price”, says Nick. As well as a range of local and exotic plants thereis also a coffee shop, which offers customers delicious home-made meals, including an award-winning breakfast.

In order to cope with rising numbers of customers, the café was recently completely refurbished, creating an appealing contemporary look.Pico Catering Projects were in charge of the project, and Moffat was chosen to supplythe front-of-house counter units, along with a bespoke service counter.

Business is booming for Northwood following the refurbishment. “We’ve seen an increase in business of over 26% since the refurbishment,” says Nick, “Despite this, the coffee shop has been able to keep up with demand, and that’s in no small part down to our new Moffat counter”.

“Moffat was chosen because of the company’sexperience of jobs like this”, says Tim Keating of Pico. “Moffat knows how to create layouts that optimise efficiency for staff, while producing an attractive environment for customers.”

The new counter is designed to maximise functionality within the available space. Constructed from attractive and hardwearing tan browngranite, it incorporates a variety of drop-in units, including bainsmarieand chilled wells for storing hot and cold foods in peak condition. Additionally, the counter is fitted with heated plate dispensers and a chilled display unit for cakes.

The counter is illuminated and protected by overhead gantries. The gantries are made with striking curved stainless steel supports and feature elliptical glass screens. They are also fitted with both heated and ambient storage cupboards underneath. Fluorescent downlighting along the front of the counter illuminates the wooden fascia.

“Even with such a large increase in custom, ourcatering staffarefinding it far easier to cope than before”, explains Nick.“Moffat designed the counter to make the customer’s journey through the serving areasmooth and fast. The staff love it, and we’ve had plenty of compliments from customers too!”

The only problem Northwood has found is they now need to revamp the kitchen itself. As Nick says, “Having seen what Moffat did for the front of house, they’re definitely on the shortlist to sort out behind the scenes.”
