Princess Anne meets E & R Moffat’s General Manager Gordon McIntosh on her 32nd annual visit to Strathcarron hospice

For the last 32 years, Princess Anne has been a patron of Strathcarron, a hospice covering central Scotland. She visits annually, and this year, on July 2nd, among the invited guests was Gordon McIntosh, Commercial Director of E & R Moffat. The Princess Royal personally thanked him and the company for its outstanding support in the development and refurbishment of the hospice’s new kitchen. Not only did Moffat manufacturer, supply and install the kitchen, they did it for free.

Strathcarron provides specialist palliative care for 1,200 terminally ill patients, most of whom stay in their own homes, with about 400 coming into the hospice ward each year and 100 people a week coming in for day care.

Arriving to the hospice by helicopter, the Princess Royal’s visit began with a tour of the day ward, after which she met the invited guests, including Gordon. After completing the entire tour, she met with another 300 invited supporters of the hospice.

The Princess Royal was well informed about the new kitchen and thanked Moffat for its generous contribution and the difference it had made already. She also said it was good to see a local manufacturer looking after its community.

Moffat manufactured stainless steel floor cupboards, wall cupboards, sinks and splashbacks for the kitchen. The cost of the installation was worth well in excess of £10,000.

“The new kitchen looks lovely,” says Irene McKie, the Hospice’s Chief Exec. “It’s terrific and has made a huge difference. Staff love it, it’s really easy to clean and it’s shiny and sparkling!”

“The gratitude from all the staff has been so rewarding,” says Gordon. “We really believe in what they’re doing, and meeting with Princess Anne and hearing just how much our efforts have been appreciated was humbling.

“We are delighted to continue supporting what is a truly wonderful local charity.”

Although Strathcarron receives some funding from the NHS, it is an independent charity. “In order to survive we have to raise £10,000 a day,” says Irene. “A gift like Moffat’s was a huge bonus – it meant the money we would have had to spend on the kitchen could go towards the vital services we supply.”
