Spain is still the UK’s number one travel destination for British tourists, but for those who traditionally head abroad for fun in the sun and are used to hiring a car, they could be in for a nasty surprise: a lack of available cars to hire.

Moneymaxim.co.uk, the UK’s leading car insurance search engine, believes that as one of Spain’s largest car rental firms, AurigaCrown will shortly cease trading, (having been trading in administration for some time) it could mean there are up to 18,000 fewer cars available over the peak holiday period for holidaymakers to hire. This could result in rental costs rising sharply.

Car rental firms have been rearranging bookings to avoid using the company but now that has been achieved it is anticipated that bookings, particularly of popular models, could outstrip supply over the summer across Spain.

Mark Bower, Managing Director at www.moneymaxim.co.uk explains;

“The message here is get in now to secure your car before the rush starts – a couple of years ago we saw customers paying well over the odds for car rental as the credit crunch reduced fleet sizes considerably. The closure of AurigaCrown could have a similar impact. It not only means paying more but also can mean that you are forced to rent a vehicle that is much larger or much smaller than you would ideally like.”

“At present we are offering car rental in key Spanish destinations from under £15 a day, and it is difficult to see these prices falling much if at all as we get closer to the summer, so to get both a great deal and peace of mind we would highly recommend booking now.”

The Moneymaxim Car Hire Comparison Service, which combines car rental prices from Carrentals.co.uk and car hire excess insurance prices, is currently offering Spanish car hire prices from £104.95 for a Mini car from Tenerife Airport for the week from 9.00 am on the 9th August 2012 to 9.00am on the 16th August 2012.

Demand for car hire over the Olympic period this summer could lead to availability issues in the UK too. The UK is likely to see demand for car hire reach unprecedented levels during the forthcoming Olympics, putting considerable strain on existing car hire stock. This could lead to a car hire shortage across Europe.
