Volcanic Ash Cloud Travel Insurance Advice

Moneymaxim.co.uk, the specialist comparison site, who have over the past year supported travellers looking for travel insurance which provides cover for the closure of airports and airspace has issued the following advice to travellers who have either bought cover since the eruption, or are looking to do so now.

Mark Bower, Managing Director of moneymaxim.co.uk said;

“The current ash cloud is clearly creating customer concern and we are suggesting that clients read terms and conditions carefully to ensure they are fully covered before relying on a policy and check with insurers directly if necessary to avoid any grey areas.

“Obviously anyone who had a policy which covers natural disasters or airspace closure prior to Saturday night is covered, and some insurers make it very clear in their terms and conditions as to when an incident triggers it to become a ‘known event’ (the point when insurers will stop accepting claims under the policy).

“During the last ash cloud some insurers determined that it was the closure of airspace that made the event ‘known’, yet this time around there is some evidence that the insurers are determining it was the original eruption.

“Of the companies that offer additional protection for airspace or airport closure we have ascertained that different insurers are taking very different views currently.

“Some are not covering claims for policies bought now the eruption has taken place, one is continuing to provide cover as long as airports are not closed, and one provides reduced cover for travel in the next seven days and then will provide full cover”

“We are tracking the up to date situation and updating our website, but are also recommending that anyone who has bought a policy and is in any way concerned as to whether they will be covered of not should contact their insurer immediately. As the incident only occurred in the past couple of days customers should be able to get a full refund if they find cover is insufficient, and obtain alternative cover”
