Montgomery College, Shepherd University Sign Articulation Agreements
The presidents of Montgomery College and Shepherd University signed four articulation agreements Wednesday, smoothing the way for Montgomery College students in computer science, engineering and mathematics programs to transfer to Shepherd University.
At a ceremony on the Rockville Campus, Montgomery College President Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, and Shepherd University President Dr. Suzanne Shipley, expressed their commitment to training the next generation of highly skilled and knowledgeable STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workers.
"I believe that the new currency in higher education is partnerships," Pollard said. "I promise you that that I am committed, as I know Dr. Shipley is, to making this partnership succeed and flourish and grow."
Pollard went on to discuss the importance of increasing student success in groups defined by socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity and gender, also known as the "achievement gap."
"Closing the achievement gap is both a moral and an economic imperative," she said. "And I believe that the action our two institutions are taking today will help us meet that imperative."

Under the new agreements, Montgomery College students earning an A.A. in computer science will have a smooth path for transfer to either the B.S. program in computer information science or computer information technology at Shepherd University. Another agreement will smooth the way for mathematics students earning an A.S. at Montgomery College to earn a B.S. at Shepherd University.
The final articulation agreement will ease the transfer process for Montgomery College students earning an A.S. in general engineering to study computer engineering at Shepherd University. Montgomery College is home to one of the nation's largest and most successful engineering transfer programs.
Applicants successfully completing the articulated program at Montgomery College with a 2.8 or better grade point average who have not matriculated at any other institution of higher education will be guaranteed transfer admission to Shepherd upon completion of the admissions application process.
Shepherd University, formerly Shepherd College, is a state university in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, just minutes beyond the Maryland border. The university currently serves more than 4,200 students.
"This is a very important time in higher education," Shipley said. "We've always been good at giving attention to the individual student... Today, we are strengthening the structure and logistics of completion."
