Montgomery College Hosts Spectrum Lecture on Human Exposure to Radiation
Dr. Marc Desrosiers, research chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology will deliver a special presentation at the Germantown Campus of Montgomery College Thursday, October 10 at 4:30 p.m. as part of the College’s Spectrum Lecture Series. The talk will take place in Globe Hall, located in the High Technology and Science Center, 20200 Observation Drive, Germantown, Md. This event is free and open to the public.
In his talk, Dr. Desrosiers will provide an introduction to radiation fundamentals and describe how Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) was used in two radiation accidents and in a study of Russian populations exposed to excessive radiation from Cold War nuclear weapons activities. The data from these studies are used by the National Cancer Institute to assess the appropriateness of radiation safety guidelines for health care and industrial workers.
Desrosiers has worked for NIST for 27 years as a research chemist in the Radiation Physic Division. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Boston College and a PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Desrosiers served as postdoctoral fellow at the Argonne National Laboratory prior to his current appointment at NIST. Desrosiers' current research includes radiation metrology and the development of standards and services. In particular, his activities include: radiation accident dosimetry; clinical radiology; and, industrial radiation processing. Desrosiers is an author of more than 100 archival publications in radiation research. He has received numerous awards, including the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award for his innovative research in radiation measurements.
Like all Spectrum Lectures, this presentation is designed for a nonscientific audience, enabling scientists, students, and the community to learn about groundbreaking advancements in science. No tickets are required to attend.
