The American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Region recently selected Montgomery College as its 2013 Outstanding College of the Year for blood drive efforts completed by the Rockville Campus Office of Student Life.

The College received the recognition for its longstanding tradition of successful blood drives. For over 10 years, the Rockville Office of Student Life has coordinated those programs. In the past year, the Rockville Campus saw an unprecedented 30 percent increase in donations. Those efforts were sparked, in large part, from volunteer support of a team of Montgomery College student mentors, the First Year Experience ambassadors.

“At Montgomery College, we are committed to bettering the lives of individuals in our community, and our blood drives provide a live-saving resource to so many in need,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, Montgomery College president. “We are tremendously grateful to the Red Cross for acknowledging those efforts by selecting Montgomery College as the Outstanding College of the Year.”

Fifty colleges and universities are among the institutions in the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Region, from Washington, D.C., Virginia, portions of Maryland and select counties in in Pennsylvania. The College accepted the award at the Red Cross region’s 22nd Annual Meeting on September 18.

The Rockville Campus Office of Student Life hosts two blood drives each semester for a total of eight days of donation collections. Clubs, student volunteers, and other organizations help promote and staff each drive, and employees and students roll up their sleeves to help save lives.
