Montgomery College Welcomes Artist in Residence Victor Ekpuk
Sarah Silberman Art Gallery to Feature Programs on African Art in October
Inspired by Nsibidi, an ancient system of graphic communication in Nigeria and Cameroon, contemporary artist Victor Ekpuk uses symbols from diverse cultures to create art work often covering entire walls or floors. His work will be on display from October 8-28 in the Sarah Silberman Art Gallery on the Rockville Campus.
On October 8 at 11:30 a.m. Ekpuk will be in the gallery to discuss his work, along with Curator for Education at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, Deborah Stokes.

Ekpuk will lead hands-on workshops on October 8, 14, and 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Space for the workshop is limited and a reservation is required. Please contact Professor Judith Stone at judith.stone@montgomerycollege.edu.
As part of a celebration of African art throughout the month, Deborah Stokes will give a talk on October 21 at noon on the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. The Yourba have the
the highest incidence of twins in the African continent and even the world. Stokes will discuss the art and ritual of Yoruba twins (ere ibeji).
A closing reception will be held Tuesday October 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All events are free and will be held in the Sarah Silberman Art Gallery. The Gallery is located on the second floor of the Paul Peck Art Building on the Rockville Campus, one block west of Route 355 at 51 Mannakee Street.
