Montgomery College President DeRionne Pollard, along with students, faculty and staff, welcomed U.S. Senator Ben Cardin to the Germantown Campus Thursday. Senator Cardin held a town hall style meeting with students to discuss President Obama's proposal to provide free community college tuition for those willing to work hard at their studies. Montgomery College is the third community college in Maryland he's visited to discuss the important issue.
A dozen students from each of Montgomery College's three campuses shared their stories of their educational aspirations with the Senator. They discussed in detail the impact that rising tuition costs has on them and their respective families.
"All Americans deserve a fair shot at success -- particularly our students, who are trying to create a better future for themselves," said Senator Cardin. "An estimated 9 million students could benefit each year from President Obama's 'America's College Promise' proposal, meaning its benefits could positively redefine the norms of American public education."
"Whether our students want to be engineers or mechanics, nurses, teachers or cybersecurity analysts, they must have access to affordable postsecondary education," said Montgomery College President Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard.

Biotechnology and cybersecurity faculty also gave Senator Cardin a tour of the recently opened Bioscience Education Center. He toured the lab where our students grow the same type of cells used by biotechnology companies right here in Montgomery County. The Senator also observed the basic steps used to manufacture biopharmaceutical products such as antibodies and vaccines.
