Matsmart-Motatos announces new Chairman of the Board
Jesper Højer, ex-CEO of Lidl International and current Chairman of Oda, assumes the position of Chairman of the Board for Matsmart-Motatos. Matsmart-Motatos is the leading European impact e-commerce business saving perfectly good products from going to waste. Effective at the beginning of September 2024, Jesper Højer succeeds Kris Beyens, who has held the position since 2023 and will continue supporting the company as Board Member.
Matsmart-Motatos' CEO Peter Beckius commented: “Jesper Højer is an authority in the FMCG industry. His experience from both traditional retail and e-commerce will no doubt be immensely valuable to us. And as we are looking ahead, our growth ambitions are primarily focused around the DACH region - which is also where Jesper finds his home turf. I will say that we have found a very good match.”
Matsmart-Motatos, the Swedish-based D2C e-commerce business tackling global food waste, sells food and consumer products at low prices to price-sensitive and sustainability-conscious customers online. The business has grown to become Europe’s leading circular e-tailer for food and is now appointing a top name from the European consumer goods sector as Chairman of the Board.
Jesper Højer built his career within Lidl, where he has held several executive positions, leading the Belgian and later International business with a presence in over 30 markets. Lidl is the German international discount retailer chain that operates over 12,000 stores, present in every member state of the European Union, Serbia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Jesper Højer commented on his appointment: “I’m excited to be part of this journey. Matsmart-Motatos has done a great job of putting the challenges of food waste in the spotlight and has already proven the business model in their home market. I see great potential in scaling and improving the business further. Also, Matsmart-Motatos clearly stands out as an important partner in providing solutions for managing overstock for food producers”.
Matsmart-Motatos’ company mission is to make saved food an ingredient in peoples’ everyday lives. In 2023 Matsmart-Motatos’ customers saved close to 22 000 tonnes of food and consumer products, resulting in over 19 000 tonnes of net carbon savings.

About Matsmart-Motatos:
Matsmart-Motatos was set up in Sweden in 2014, in response to the global issue of food wastage. Approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Matsmart-Motatos allows consumers to purchase food, groceries, and general household items which would otherwise risk being thrown away by FMCG producers. Factors such as overproduction, incorrect packaging, seasonal trends, and short expiry dates all contribute to a surplus of items which cannot be sold in time. Matsmart-Motatos saves these products, selling them at low cost to consumers online, and delivering them directly to customers’ doorsteps. The Matsmart-Motatos' product range is wide and varied, ranging from popular pantry items such as breads and jams to beauty and health products, pet foods, and games and toys. Since its founding, Matsmart-Motatos has raised around 160 MEUR in capital and saved over 80,000 tonnes of food and consumer products. The e-commerce shops are currently open in five markets.
