The e-commerce and impact company Motatos launches a new product range made from saved produce under the label: SAVED By Motatos.

- This is something I have dreamed of doing from the early days of our business. And I’m just so glad that we can finally present these products to our customers, says Karl Andersson, CEO and founder.

Motatos, the Swedish-based D2C e-commerce business tackling global food waste is stepping up its food saving game from only saving readily produced food and consumer products to saving produce and making new products from it. The new product range includes ten different plant based products.

- The SAVED product line is really all about inspiring and easifying healthy and planet friendly choices in the everyday lives of our customers, continues Karl Andersson.

The vegetarian SAVED By Motatos product range is created with affordability, creativity and great taste in mind. To begin with, the assortment includes chocolate, vegetable spreads, pestos, vegetable soups and pasta. Every product has its own story to it.

- All products are using saved produce as their main ingredient. Our chocolate is a wonderful example. Did you know that when chocolate factories switch between producing different flavors they clean the pipes in the machine with chocolate? Normally this chocolate is not sold but our chocolate is exactly this: a surprise mix of chocolate, says Karl Andersson.

Just as with the earlier launch of Motatos’ private label By Motatos the SAVED product range has a give back element. One percent of gross profit from the label goes to the international organization The Hunger Project.

-  We are very excited about the launch of SAVED that will enable consumers to make active choices to contribute to decreasing food wasted, while at the same time contributing to the end of global hunger. Says Malin Flemström, CEO, The Hunger Project Sweden.

Karl Andersson comments on the partnership with the organization:

- To us this is an integral part of the venture of going into food production. Our collaboration with The Hunger Project is a long term one, just as our aspiration to push for sustainable reform of the food system. We’re playing the long game, concludes Karl Andersson.

Malin Flemström concludes on the same note;

- Our partnership with Motatos rallies around our joint mission to transform the food systems. By collaborating we can ensure that they become more equitable and sustainable from both the perspective of our community partners who are dependent on their livelihood from these systems and from the consumers that purchase the food. Transformation of the systems would allow a sustainable production of food for all of us on the planet with minimal waste.

Motatos was set up in Sweden in 2014 by founders Ulf Skagerström, Erik Södergren, and Karl Andersson, in response to the global issue of food wastage. Approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Motatos allows consumers to purchase food, grocery, and general household items which would otherwise be thrown away by FMCG producers. Factors such as overproduction, incorrect packaging, seasonal trends, and short expiry dates all contribute to a surplus of items which cannot be sold in time. Motatos saves these products, selling them at low-cost to consumers online, and delivering directly to customers’ doorsteps. The Motatos product range is wide and varied, ranging from popular pantry items such as breads and jams, to beauty and health products, pet foods, and games and toys. Since founding, Motatos has saved over 40,000 tonnes of food from being wasted.
