Mott MacDonald has been appointed by The Department for Education to provide multi-disciplinary support to the Special Educational Needs Green Paper Pathfinder Programme. Thirty one local authorities, their local healthcare and third sector partners have been awarded grants through the joint Department for Education and Department of Health initiative to work as ‘Pathfinders’ to develop a transformational joint assessment and planning process for children with special educational needs.

Mott MacDonald will provide central coordination and facilitate communication between Pathfinders. They will also directly support Pathfinders through the delivery of professional advice and project management, including specialist  expertise in health, education, social care and local government, alongside strategic planning, service re-configuration, process redesign, knowledge management, economic, finance and business analysis.

David Cox, head of Mott MacDonald’s management consulting and development team commented: “The Pathfinder support contract is an excellent example of how our multi-disciplinary teams can be deployed in support of public sector transformation which aims to improve the lives of some of the most deserving members of society. “Connected care” is what the public want and expect, irrespective of organisational boundaries. This work represents a ‘step change’ in meeting this expectation.”

Sarah Teather, Children's Minister, said: "In our Green Paper on Special Educational Needs and disability we proposed a wide range of changes to the current system in response to the frustrations of children, their families and the professionals who work with them. We've set up 20 local pathfinders across England to test out the reforms. Mott MacDonald will play a key role to provide the pathfinders with invaluable business expertise and support so the pathfinders can share and consolidate learning and achieve real change for disabled children and their families."

Mott MacDonald’s contract will run until the end of 2012.
