Mott MacDonald has been appointed by MARG Limited to design the sea water intake, outfall and circulating cooling system for a 500MW power plant located in Bhavnagar in the state of Gujarat, India.

MARG is one of fastest growing infrastructure organisations in India. Its engineering, procurement and construction business is involved in the turnkey execution of balance of plant packages for power plants, sea ports, harbours jetties, break waters, storage and transmission facilities for oil, gas, water, and bulk material handling, as well as other infrastructure projects.

Gujarat has the strongest regional economy in India with a number of refineries, petrochemical plants and textile facilities. The 2X250MW lignite fuelled thermal power station, owned by Bhavnagar Energy Company Limited (BECL), is being developed to meet increasing power demand.

Cooling water for the power plant is being provided by drawing sea water from the Gulf of Khambhat, 5km to the south of the plant. MARG is designing, procuring, constructing and commissioning (EPCC) the INR2400 million sea water intake, outfall and cooling water system for BECL. Mott MacDonald will undertake detailed engineering of the sea water intake system, circulating cooling water system, and onshore and offshore pipelines.

Ramesh Kumar, Mott MacDonald‘s project director said: “As a design consultant for this project we are adopting 3D modelling for analysis and design. This will give us a more realistic approach which will allow us to develop optimal solutions.”

He further added: “Mott MacDonald has a wealth of experience in the water sector. In addition to our detailed design work we’re also undertaking wave modelling and sedimentation study. This will give us crucial information of the wave behaviour in the Gulf of Khambhat, known as one of roughest seas in the world, and its effect on the offshore bund structure. This will allow us to optimise size quantity and consequently cost of armour stone units to be used in the bund."
