Mott MacDonald’s international development consultancy, Euroconsult Mott MacDonald, has been appointed to improve the quality of technical education offered by three schools and three training centres run by the Holding Company of Water and Waste Water (HCWW) in Egypt. The project is funded under the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity development in Higher Education (NICHE) programme, which is part of the Netherlands organisation for international cooperation in higher education (Nuffic).

More skilled workers in the water supply and sanitation sector are needed in order to create a more sustainable and integrated water management system in Egypt. The project aims to increase the supply of competent technicians, trained and educated by the technical vocational schools and HCWW training centres, and improve management capacity at the centres and schools.

Mott MacDonald, together with its partners Vitens-Evides International, NHL University of Applied Sciences, Capacity Building International (CBI) and Chemonics Egypt, will work in close cooperation with HCWW and the staff of the technical schools and company training centres to manage and implement the project. It will also coordinate with the Ministry of Education and other donors involved in technical and vocational education and training and water and sanitation in Egypt to achieve synergies and maximise overall impact.

Caroline Bäcker, Mott MacDonald’s project director said: “The project is important in its focus on improving the skills of some 40,000 technicians who need to operate and maintain increasingly complex plants and equipment in a generally under-resourced institutional environment. We aim to strengthen the capacity of the technical schools and training centres to better match the supply of and demand for skilled labour in this sector.”

The contract value of the project is €1.8 million. The 4 year project is due to be completed in the final quarter of 2015.
