Mott MacDonald has appointed Mike Barker as managing director of its India business, taking over from Satyavrat Srivastava who has retired after 35 years with the company. Mike will be responsible for further developing Mott MacDonald’s position as one of India’s leading management, engineering and development consultancies in all sectors including energy, transport, water, buildings, industry, health and education.

Mike has been with Mott MacDonald for almost 25 years and has worked on some of the world’s most prestigious sports projects including the new Wembley Stadium where he headed the team responsible for all of the stadium’s engineering design, and the Southern Grandstand at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. Airports have also played a major role in Mike’s career with involvement in both the £2 billion Heathrow Terminal 5 development and Hong Kong International Airport which featured the world’s largest single airport building when opened in 1998. Most recently he led the design team on the multi award winning Manchester Civil Justice Centre in the UK, which set new standards in energy efficient buildings.

Mott MacDonald has been working in India for over 40 years and now employs over 1600 people from offices in key locations including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Across the country the company is helping to meet the need for faster, more efficient urban transport, and is involved on metro projects in Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur and Mumbai. It also helped deliver the mega-scale Delhi International Airport and is now designing the expansion of Malé International Airport in the Maldives.

The company is a recognised leader in the industry sector and is working for some of the world’s largest corporations. As project manager, Mott MacDonald is developing a state-of-the-art full technology centre located in Bangalore for Shell India and has provided design, engineering, procurement, project and construction management services for the development of petroleum, oil and lubricant terminals on the Bay of Bengal for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. The consultancy is also providing engineering review, procurement assistance and construction management for the Bunge edible oil refinery located in Kandla, Gujarat. Environmental, water and sanitation improvement work includes the INR55 billion, 900 million litres per day capacity Mumbai IV Water Supply project, including a new reservoir on the Vaitarna River, upgrading and expansion of trunk mains and expansion of treatment and storage facilities.

Commenting on his appointment Mike said: “India is a major country for Mott MacDonald and we are already working on some of the country’s most significant infrastructure projects. As the country continues to develop it provides great business opportunities across all of Mott MacDonald’s key markets. In my role as managing director I aim to build on the success that Satyavrat Srivastava has achieved over recent years, growing the business further, expanding our services and delivering solutions and support that contribute to our customers’ success.”
