Mott MacDonald, the global management, engineering and development consultancy, has won three awards at this year’s British Expertise Awards which took place at the Institute of Directors in London, UK. The consultancy won the Major Project of the Year, Emerging Market, and Innovation Award categories.

The top prize for Major Project of the Year was awarded for Mott MacDonald’s work on the Delhi Metro Phase II project in India. The consultancy designed more than a third of the 81 stations and two of the most complex sections of the Delhi Metro Phase II project with worldwide input from across the company. The work was vital in enabling phase II to be delivered and the consultancy is now working on Phase III of the metro.

Mohan Gupta, Mott MacDonald project director said: “The Delhi Metro expansion has benefited all of the city’s 17 million inhabitants and we are proud to have been involved and appreciate the recognition of our work on this challenging project.”

Mott MacDonald also won the Emerging Market Award for its work in Iraq, where it has completed more than 1000 projects since 2003. For the past six years the consultancy has been quietly playing a significant role in developing essential services and assisting in improving the quality of life for people across southern Iraq. Reconstruction work has been geared to providing essential services such as power generation and transmission, water supply, sanitation, bottled gas and fuel stations. Mott MacDonald is now working on some significant projects with potential to generate revenue and accelerate the economic recovery of Iraq.

Gordon Turley, Mott MacDonald’s development director on major projects said: “We are very proud of our work in Iraq and are committed to the country and its people. Part of the drive of working for Mott MacDonald is that you are making a difference and contributing to local communities. This is very much the ethos of Mott MacDonald – to make a difference in countries that might need it.”

The third major win came in the Innovation Award category for LATreatä, a corrosion protection technique developed and patented by Mott MacDonald and BAC Corrosion Control. LATreat™ uses phased electrical currents passed through seawater to protect marine steel structures against accelerated low water corrosion (ALWC). ALWC affects marine structures by eating away steel at up to 25 times the rate of normal corrosion. LATreat™ uses electro-chemistry to derive all the chemical agents from seawater itself, the process is highly environmentally friendly. Since 2007 LATreat™ consortium members comprising Mott MacDonald, BAC, Aberdeen Harbour Board, the Port of London Authority, Shoreham Port Authority and Hutchison Ports have been using the process to treat ALWC.

In addition to these awards, Mott MacDonald was also commended for its work on the Surgil Gas Field in Uzbekistan in the Environment Impact Award category.
