Mott MacDonald reappointed on Firelink, Great Britain

Mott MacDonald has been reappointed by the UK’s Department for Communities & Local Government to provide contract management and technical assurance on the £350 million Firelink project. The consultancy was first appointed to the project in 2002.

In 2009, technology modernisation was largely completed on the Firelink programme with the replacement of existing local radio technology used by 56 fire and rescue services in England, Scotland and Wales with a single integrated system. Through improved voice quality, interoperability between services and a resilient and secure network, it delivers improved communications between response teams and control rooms during and after incidents and also supports communications with other emergency services.

Richard Hewlett, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “Fire and rescue services were operating on disparate, analogue radio systems meaning they could not communicate with each other or other emergency services. Under Firelink, radios were installed in 7,000 fire engines and 3,500 cars, 1,500 base stations were built or enhanced and 102 control rooms were fitted out.”

Mott MacDonald will continue to provide contract management services to assure the government that this critical service is being delivered to fire and rescue services. The consultancy will also provide communications engineering expertise as well as commercial, supplier, service, security and stakeholder management services.

Mott MacDonald’s latest commission runs until the end of 2016.
