Mott MacDonald’s Mike Blackburn has been appointed chairman of British Expertise, taking over from Steve Taylor of Crown Agents who steps down after completing his year in office.

Founded in 1966 British Expertise is the leading UK private sector organisation for British companies offering professional services internationally. It has more than 200 corporate consultant member companies including many of the UK’s largest engineering consultants, a wide variety of smaller consulting companies and a number of specialised individuals. Membership has broadened in recent years and now includes companies in the financial services, security and sports and leisure sectors.

As group practice manager for Mott MacDonald’s water and environment business, Mike brings with him over 35 years of experience in planning, management and implementation of water supply, wastewater and sanitation projects worldwide, including both rural and urban projects. He has worked extensively overseas and is very aware of the challenges faced by the organisation and its members.

Commenting on his appointment Mike said: “I am looking forward to my period as chairman, working with the chief executive on policy and the future direction of British Expertise. In the current economic climate where there is not a lot of work here in the UK or in Europe, promoting British Expertise and its members’ skills overseas is becoming more and more important.”

British Expertise focuses on exporting UK skills and experience abroad. It introduces members to key British and international contacts through networking events, including trade missions and inward investor visits, and also offers market intelligence and training for its members.

“Membership allows companies to build contacts and introduces them to people and services that they might not be aware of. It’s all about its members trying to win and generate business. Through links with government, help can also be given to companies working overseas and facing difficult issues that may require high level intervention and negotiation to resolve. Membership is an asset for any company seeking brand recognition and increasing visibility at government levels,” Mike explains.

Mike’s role as chairman will end in June 2013.
