Mott MacDonald secures second role on Bergen light rail project, Norway
Mott MacDonald has been appointed as consulting engineer by Bybanen Utbygging, a subsidiary company of Hordaland County Council, to provide detailed design for a €90 million workshop and depot which will serve the Bergen light rail transport system in Norway.
The depot, which has a 50 – 70 tram capacity, will cater for trams running on all five stages of the light rail system. Mott MacDonald will provide full detailed design services on the project, including architecture, engineering, cost management and equipment specification, while also assisting with procurement during the project’s construction.
This new appointment is in addition to the consultancy’s role as detailed design engineer for Stage 3 of the Bergen light rail development. Costing an estimated €220 million, Stage 3 comprises 7.2km of double track from Rådal to Flesland airport, 2.8km of tunnels and over 1km of structures including a feature structure over the Flyplassvegen at Birkelandsskiftet.
Mott MacDonald’s project director Conor O’Donovan said: “This appointment increases Mott MacDonald involvement in the development of Bergen’s light rail transport system, which will provide a sustainable solution to the city’s traffic congestion, reduce dependency on cars and increase the use of public transport. The workshop and depot will be a crucial part of the light rail infrastructure in the city.”
The depot is expected to be operational by the end of 2015.
