Mott MacDonald to manage education fund in Rwanda

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to design and manage the implementation of the ‘Innovation for Education’ fund in Rwanda.

Innovation for Education will be implemented jointly with the Rwanda Ministry of Education and will support projects aimed at improving the quality of education in the country. The scheme, which launches with a call for applications¹ on 4 September 2012, will support small to medium scale innovative projects led by NGOs, faith based organisations or the private sector, within the framework of Rwanda’s Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP). Approved projects will have two years to prove their impact, after which successful innovations will be adopted by the Government of Rwanda and implemented on a nationwide scale.

In order to be eligible for funding, projects must be able to:

● Demonstrate that they are genuinely innovative 

● Generate evidence to demonstrate impact on the quality of education

● Be replicable by the Government of Rwanda

● Be cost effective, with the potential for national scale up.

Mott MacDonald will also play a key role in strengthening the technical capacity of the Ministry of Education, enabling it to become an ‘innovation manager’ that is able to identify, nurture, scale up and sustain innovative approaches in education and use them as key drivers for sectoral change.

Addie van Ommering, Mott MacDonald’s project director said: “With the launch of Innovation for Education, DFID contributes to the objectives of Rwanda’s ESSP 2010-2015, which includes a focus on reducing the number of early school leavers and improving the quality of education. We expect this will enhance chances for young people in Rwanda to access quality education and, as a result, contribute to Rwanda’s vision to become a middle income country by 2020.”

The project is due for completion towards the middle of 2015.
