PLAIN JANE at the Royal Exchange, Manchester, 19th - 23rd Oct
PLAIN JANE at the Royal Exchange, 19th - 23rd October 2010 'I want to break her' Jane is the new girl at an exclusive boarding school. She wasn’t popular at her old school, and she’s doing even worse with her new roommates. Awkward and naïve, she soon falls prey to the vicious games of Becki and Holly, who are determined to rip her to pieces before term ends. Critically acclaimed theatre company Cheap Seats bring the world premiere of their new production, PLAIN JANE, to the Royal Exchange Theatre from 19th – 23rd October 2010. Written by award-winning, Manchester-based playwright Alistair McDowall, and directed by Clive Judd, the play is a black comedy with teeth. The play touches upon aspects of teenage bullying, sexuality and friendship when Jane, an awkward and naive 15 year old, enters a world she is just not prepared for. McDowall is quickly establishing a reputation as one of the most exciting young playwrights in the region, whilst Judd (Director’s Guild Award for Most Promising Director at NSDF 2009) has most recently enjoyed success as assistant director on the multi-award winning PUNK ROCK and as co-director of Some Stories. PLAIN JANE brings together an exciting cast of new talent – Elisabeth Hopper, Caitlin Joseph, Paul Sockett, Sally Hodgkiss and Sarah Winter. Previous productions from Cheap Seats include 5:30 (Arts Council Award for Best Performance, Best New Play and Best Fringe Production nominations at the MEN Theatre Awards) and eighteen stupid reasons why i love you lots and lots (Best New Writing award, Buxton Fringe Festival) which both garnered awards and five star reviews during performances around the UK. -ENDS- When: 7.30pm, Tues 19th Oct – Fri 22nd Oct and 4.00pm and 8.00pm Sat 23rd Oct Where: Royal Exchange Theatre, St Anns Square, Manchester, M2 7DH Box Office: 0161 833 9833 / www.royalexchangetheatre.org.uk PRESS FOR CHEAP SEATS ‘Powerful, graphic and poetic’ (Five Stars) – MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS ‘A script which perfectly captures the modern urban idiom’ – UK THEATRE NETWORK ‘Challenging, upsetting, but superb piece of theatre.’ – LEEDS GUIDE NOTES TO EDITORS Cheap Seats was founded by Alistair McDowall and Lucy Oliver-Harrison in 2007, and has previously worked with The Lowry, Contact Theatre, The Royal Exchange Theatre, The Bolton Octagon, The Young Vic, The English Theatre of Bruges and Halifax Square Chapel.
