Munters becomes a leader in NOx emission control for marine diesel engines Munters and ABB Fläkt Marine have reached an agreement that Munters acquires the business in the area of NOx (nitrogen oxides) emission control from ABB Fläkt Marine, including know-how and patent rights. This will enable Munters to widen its services to the Marine and Shipbuilding industries in the area of emission control for diesel engines. ABB Fläkt Marine has been involved with NOx emission control for 10 years and is well known for its SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction). Munters launched its patented technology for NOx emission control - H.A.M. (Humid Air Motor) in the late 90s. H.A.M. is based on a technique of humidifying the compressed inlet air of the diesel engine. The combined business employs about 15 people including the people transferred from ABB. "New international regulations and increased environmental awareness within the marine, shipbuilding and power generation industries have resulted in a high demand for technologies that help to reduce emissions of NOx into the atmosphere," says Mats R Karlsson, Division President of Munters HumiCool Europe and continues: "We can now offer the marine industry a complete product range by having both the SCR and the HAM system in our portfolio. To be able to cope with the rapidly increasing demand, we will strengthen our R&D and project management capability. The combined knowledge and expertise in this area will give Munters a leading position."
