Munters cleans air after the World Trade Center collapse Munters Moisture Control Services has completed a project to clean the air in two New York City office buildings damaged by the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers. Located at 111 and 115 Broadway, just one block from "Ground Zero", the Trinity Buildings were immersed in the giant cloud of smoke, dust and debris which resulted from the destruction of the two towers. Except for the north side of 115 Broadway, which faced the collapsed buildings and had windows broken from flying debris, the buildings were not damaged from the event. However, clouds of dust were forced into the structures requiring extensive cleaning and deodorizing. "Munters has helped the building's management clean the air inside the offices using a two part process," said Mike Conlon, Munters NYC district manager. "Our services have helped return the air to a cleaner, more pleasant condition for returning workers. Building management felt that this was helpful in making tenants feel safe when reoccupying their offices." Munters set up "air scrubbers" on 20 floors of the buildings and then built an air moving system to circulate the interior air through them. The air scrubbers contain both particulate and HEPA filters, which are capable of cleaning extremely small particles from the air. To eliminate the smell of smoke, Munters used wet and dry fogging processes. "A chemical agent is turned into a "fog" by application equipment," said Conlon. "This dry fog permeates all the nooks and crannies of the sealed area, neutralizing the smell of smoke. Where more appropriate, our technicians spray on a wet fog to eliminate the smoky odor." "The buildings were saved from severe smoke damage," said Conlon, "because management turned off the HVAC system after One World Trade Center was hit. By doing so, the system wasn't running during the collapse, and thus did not draw in additional smoke and dust."
