Atlantic Coastline Bracing for Stronger than Normal Hurricane Season
MXenergy offers advice to homeowners on how to prepare
Stamford, CT – April 4, 2011 – If recent predictions are accurate, the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will be a stormy one whose impact will be felt along the U.S. coastline. AccuWeather recently released its spring forecast for the 2011 season which begins on June 1,2o11 and culminates November 30th.
AccuWeather forecasters are calling for “an active season with more impact on the U.S. coastline than last year” predicting 15 named tropical storms, eight reaching hurricane strength and three becoming “major” (Category 3) storms.
While the start of the season is still a few months away, MXenergy is encouraging its customers along the coastline to think about how to prepare.
“The potential for hurricanes is just a fact of life for people living on the coastline,” says Marjorie Kass, MXenergy Managing Director. “Whether the 2011 season is as strong as predicted remains to be seen but the forecast should serve as an excellent motivator to help people prepare.”
Hurricane Preparedness Tips
- Know What To Do in A Power Outage: Have contact information for your power company easily accessible so you can report outages and receive necessary updates
- Turn It Off: It is important to know where shut-off valves are located for water, gas and electricity and how to use them
- Consider A Generator: If you live in a hurricane-prone location, consider purchasing a generator to provide power during the storm
- Trim Those Trees: Heavy, low-hanging branches can be a major source of damage during a hurricane. Keep branches and shrubs trimmed and away from the house
- Stock Up: Experts recommend having a two-week supply of non-perishable food, water and prescriptions on hand at all times. Make sure you also have enough batteries and food for any pets
- Make A Plan: Whether you live in an hurricane zone or not, everyone should have an emergency preparedness plan which includes necessary contact numbers, important documents and paperwork and an agreed upon meeting place and action plan
AccuWeather cites a waning La Nina, Saharan dust and positive warm Atlantic waters as major factors in the 2011 prediction. An average Atlantic hurricane season produces 10 named tropical storms, with six hurricanes, two of which are categorized as major.
