Natural Gas Could Soon Be the Fuel of Choice for America’s Trucking Fleets

Stamford, CT – March 30, 2011  - On April 6, 2011, Congress will vote on a historic piece of legislation which could represent the beginning of a dramatic shift in America’s overseas energy consumption.

The Natural Gas Act, championed by billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens, would significantly expand the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel for America’s heavy-duty truck fleets.  If passed, this legislation would represent a swing away from dependence on foreign oil and instead would focus on utilizing America’s own rich resource, natural gas.

The legislation, which Pickens has stated publicly he believes will pass, is just another indication of America’s renewed and growing appreciation for natural gas according to Jeffrey Mayer, President and CEO of MXenergy, one of the nation’s leading independent energy providers.

“The nuclear crisis in Japan has already triggered a renewed interest and appreciation for natural gas in this country,” says Mayer.  “The Natural Gas Act is an opportunity for the United States to make an important shift in its energy policy and consumption.”

According to Mayer, the United States has enough natural gas resources to last for a century and new technologies, such as hydraulic fracturing, are continually revealing more.

The current version of the Natural Gas Act, is authored by Rep. John Sullivan, R-OKla., is more narrowly focused than the two previous versions of the bill which did not find the support necessary to advance.

If the U.S. holds to current importing patterns - importing nearly 70% of daily crude oil requirements – it will send $10 trillion over the next 10 years overseas.

“There can be no question that America must utilize her own energy supplies, be it wind, solar, or natural gas,” continues Mayer.

T. Boone Pickens has spent more than $80 million of his own money to promote his “Pickens Plan” designed to urge the United States to end its dependence on foreign oil and utilize energy sources found at home.
