When it Comes to Lighting, Most Americans Support «Going Green»
New Gallup Poll shows most Americans support phasing out traditional light bulbs
Stamford, CT – February 22, 2011 – It seems after some initial grumbling, Americans have finally become accustomed to the idea of «going green» when it comes to lighting their homes.
According to a new USA Today/Gallup poll most Americans support the U.S. law which begins phasing out traditional light bulbs next year. Almost 3 out of 4 Americans, or 71%, say they have replaced standard light bulbs in their home over the past few years with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs) and 84% say they are either «very satisfied» or «satisfied» with the alternatives. The new Gallup poll results come just as GOP efforts intensify in Congress to repeal the bipartisan 2007 law, which begins phasing out the traditional incandescent bulb in January 2012.
CFLs use 75% less energy which can have a dramatic impact on home electricity bills. MXenergy, one of the nation's fastest growing independent energy providers says this is just one way consumers can save money and help the planet at the same time.
“Converting to CFLs or LEDs is a simple, easy step homeowners can take and have an immediate impact on their home energy efficiency,” says Marjorie Kass, MXenergy Managing Director and host of MXTV’s “Attainable Sustainables.” “By making this move, people automatically reduce their electricity consumption. Our hope is once they take that first step they will become excited and motivated to look for other areas where they can become more efficient as well.”
Kass says the quickest way for homeowners to identify areas for improvement is through a home energy audit. On average an audit can save the average homeowner several hundred dollars a year and there are government rebates that can offset the initial cost.
In order to educate people about the importance of energy efficiency and other environmental issues, MXenergy has created its own On Demand cable channel, MXenergy TV, or MXTV for short, which can be found on Cablevision iO Channel 654 in the Northeast United States. The piece “Home Energy Check-up” is just one of many programs focused on energy efficiency and green living.
